In Memoriam: Bella Abzug (1920-1998)

Passionate and outspoken about women's equality, "Battling Bella"served in Congress from 1971 to 1977, where she and Martha Griffiths introduced more than 20 bills related to women. Abzug was a cofounder of the National Women's Political Caucus and the Congressional Caucus on Women's Issues.

She introduced the first gay rights bill in Congress and was presiding officer of the National Commission on the Observance of International Women's Year, which organized the National Women's Congress in Houston in 1977. She participated in the Women's Conferences in Mexico City (1975), Copenhagen (1980), Nairobi (1985) and Beijing (1995).

In 1994 Abzug was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, and in 1996 was a Ms magazine Woman of the Year honoree.
